There are still some collegiates in region B soaking up the last few days of summer, but most have returned to school. With each new school year comes anticipation, excitement, and goals. Aside from having goals in for your grades, or social interactions, you should be setting some SWE goals as well!

Were you an active member of your school’s section last year? If not, then consider joining a committee, volunteering at outreach events, and participating in networking events. Worried about not knowing anyone at the meeting or event? Bring a friend or roommate! Or just start introducing yourself to everyone when you get to an event. College is about putting yourself in different situations, and challenging your limits. You will constantly be meeting strangers in your life, so now is the best time to practice. Every SWE section is glad to have new people involved, so you will be welcomed.

Technology is a great way to connect with your local section. If you haven’t already, sign up for their emails (most schools send those out weekly or biweekly). Most sections have a Facebook page, and some even tweet. If you are still at a loss on how to connect, find your school section’s website, which will be fresh with opportunities to become involved.

If you are already involved with your section, then start inviting all your engineering friends who aren’t a part of SWE. Sometimes all it takes is an invitation to get someone to attend a meeting. That personal touch can make all the difference! Whenever you are asked about SWE talk about all the amazing opportunities available at the local and Societal level. Also, don’t be afraid to stand up in class and invite people to your meetings. This is a great form of advertisement and gives you the opportunity to practice your public speaking skills.

All these activities listed above are easy to do, and should be basic SWE goals for everyone. What are some of your SWE goals this year? We are excited to hear what everyone has planned for this new school year!
