Incoming first-year California Polytechnic State University of San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly SLO) students don’t spend their very first school first week taking classes but instead explore the campus and the community as part of the Week of Welcome (WOW) orientation program. SWE’s presence in the 2014 WOW festivities contributed to the large showing at the first general meeting of the 2014-2015 academic year.
Over the summer, the WOW, eWeek, and Open House Director coordinated with the Department and Club Relations Officer and the school’s Week of Welcome Orientation Committee to confirm that SWE would have a place in the showcase and at various department events. Volunteers on the days of the events helped gather SWE gear, posters, and pamphlets for the booth and presentations.
SWE officers represented and introduced the organization at different events that Cal Poly’s 9 engineering departments held on Wednesday, September 17th, to introduce incoming students to their faculty and the many involved groups on campus. Cal Poly’s Society of Women Engineers also took part in the WOW Club Showcase on Sunday, September 21st and introduced the organization at the booth, where over 400 students signed up on an interest list.
Our participation in the annual orientation events acquaints our goals and opportunities with the student masses. We not only spread the word about SWE, but also had a ton of fun too!
