On November 12, 2015, three Cal Poly SWE Outreach Representatives visited San Luis Obispo High School and gave a lunchtime engineering presentation in the school’s Career Center.
The purpose of this presentation was to speak to students about choosing a discipline in engineering for their college applications. We explained statistics in the field, addressed common engineering stereotypes, and introduced sixteen disciplines of engineering along with companies that hire those types of engineers.
Cal Poly SWE coordinated with the high school’s College and Career Center Specialist in order to make this event happen. This involved setting a date, choosing the location, and advertising the presentation via the high school’s Daily Bulletin and flyers posted around campus and in every math and physics class.
The presentation was successful in giving the participants a better understanding about what engineering is and the different disciplines available. Cal Poly SWE looks forward to continuing to visit and outreach to high schools!
