On January 13th, 2016, UCSD SWE had our first GBM of the Winter Quarter! Many students came out and we were able to share some laughs with friends over delicious food from Panda Express. Our members learned about our upcoming events, such as our Valentine’s Day social and the Regional Conference in Seattle. We also heard from representatives of the multinational corporation, Kyocera, which has a branch right here in San Diego. Our Team Tech will be working with Kyocera this year. The representatives, one of whom is an alumni of UCSD, described all the amazing projects and work the company is involved with internationally as well as the project they will be collaborating with us on. Our other speaker was Zelekha Amirzada, an attorney, who currently works as a salary negotiations coach for many women. She gave us all some alarming statistics about the disparity between men and women when it comes to negotiating their salary, including the fact that even among her fellow lawyers there are women who have not asked for a raise. It opened our eyes to the truth behind not only salary negotiations, but also how undervalued women are, particularly by themselves. She left us with some extremely helpful tips about confidence and how to talk to our bosses in the future. So far, the quarter is off to a great start!
